For a new installation or a rethink of your coverage, we offer a free site survey across N14. We look at the actual entrances, not just the size of the house. You receive a fixed written quote before deciding whether to proceed.
Start with the fault, not a shopping list
Tell us whether one camera has stopped, every picture has disappeared or the monitor works while your phone does not. Those are different faults. We test the recorder supply, camera power and connections in a sensible order, checking the cable before recommending replacement hardware.
A typical job here: at a 1930s semi near Grovelands Park, a side camera cuts out during wet weather. We inspect its exposed junction and test the cable back to the house. Replacing a damaged connector may be enough; fitting an expensive camera onto a wet connection would leave the cause untouched.
What we cover during your free N14 survey
We ask you to walk the property with us. A drive, side gate and rear entrance each need a useful view, but they need not all have identical cameras. We check where visitors stop, where vehicles obstruct the scene and whether an open gate hides an approaching person.
We also inspect mounting surfaces, possible cable routes, recorder ventilation and the connection to your router. The survey costs nothing and carries no obligation. Repair testing or remedial work is agreed separately; a free survey is not an open-ended promise of free labour. Our written scope identifies the equipment and work you are approving.
Semis, detached houses and station-side flats
Southgate's housing changes the camera plan. A semi may have an exposed side passage, while a detached home has more than one route around the building. We check both sides rather than assuming the front and back views cover everything. We keep brackets accessible for cleaning without putting cameras within easy reach.
Around Southgate Circus and the Grade II station, flats can share an entrance or outside wall. We establish who can authorise fittings before drilling. Near Oakwood, tell us about locked gates, parking arrangements and access through communal areas when booking, so the visit can concentrate on the equipment rather than searching for keys.
Get a readable image after the porch light goes off
Mature trees around Southgate can shade entrances and move across a detection zone. We assess the camera's view at ground level, including branches, hedges and a visitor standing underneath the porch. Tree movement is a CCTV framing issue here, not a reason to specify equipment based on television reception.
Night images can fail because infrared reflects off a wall, a dome is dirty or a nearby light points straight into the lens. We address those causes before adding illumination. Colour night recording needs sufficient light. Where a night test needs a later visit, we explain that arrangement rather than claiming a daylight demonstration proves everything.
Recording checks that go further than a live picture
A monitor showing the driveway proves very little about yesterday's footage. We inspect recording schedules, the system clock, disk status and available playback. A beeping recorder can indicate storage trouble, but we read its warning before deciding what it needs.
If a drive requires replacement, we check compatibility and explain that a fresh drive will not bring back missing recordings. Mention any incident footage before we change settings. We avoid formatting storage you may need and discuss export options first. After repair, we retrieve a new test recording from each affected channel.
Keep usable wiring and secure phone access
Older coax cameras and newer network cameras cannot simply be mixed at random. We identify the recorder's supported formats and test existing runs. Sound cabling may be reusable with compatible replacements; damaged or unsuitable cable gets a separate explanation in the quote. For new permanent coverage, wired PoE usually gives us a straightforward connection to test.
We help with app failures after broadband changes as well. We check the recorder's network connection before touching your phone account, then test remote viewing on mobile data. You control the main login. For inherited equipment, we establish ownership and use the manufacturer's supported recovery process, not a guessed password or an unauthorised bypass.
Useful coverage without watching the neighbours
We aim at your approach and apply privacy masking where neighbouring windows or gardens would otherwise appear. A wide pavement view is not automatically necessary just because the camera can capture it. We discuss tighter framing, signage and secure access when recording extends outside your boundary.
Shared entrances need a named person responsible for recordings and an agreed reason for each view. We discuss retention rather than keeping everything indefinitely. Listed buildings and conservation restrictions can affect external alterations, so we flag approvals before installation. Discreet placement does not remove the need for permission where it applies.

Finchley Aerials and Satellites brings 25 years' experience from our base on Britannia Road, Finchley N12 9RU. Call free on 0800 206 2385 or send equipment photographs by WhatsApp to 07595 292534. A recorder label and a description of the fault help us prepare without asking you to dismantle anything.
Our phone hours are Monday to Saturday, 8am to 7pm, with on-site work until sunset. We offer same-day attendance where possible and free advice before booking. Say whether you need urgent CCTV repairs or a free Southgate site survey; we will explain the next step and agree a clear price before work starts.
