Our Freeview work covers new televisions, recorders, missing HD services and Freeview Play connections across EN5. We do not start by selling a new aerial. First we establish whether the fault is in the broadcast signal, the wiring or the receiver, and tell you plainly which one it is.
Why a new TV in EN5 can still show gaps
A new television should carry a modern tuner, but it only knows what the aerial hands it. If a cable is damaged, the set may find a handful of services and report the rest as unavailable. We measure signal quality at the wall before blaming the tuner or the settings.
When the screen was bought for its smart features, remember that internet apps and aerial channels are separate systems. We test both. That prevents the common mistake of paying for roof work when the actual issue is a network setting, or the reverse.
High Barnet ridge, New Barnet dips
Houses along the ridge often have a good view across London, which helps reception but also exposes aerials to wind. We inspect mast and lashings during a signal check. Around New Barnet, shallower ground and nearby rooflines can reduce quality, so alignment deserves careful testing.
Crystal Palace serves much of our wider area, and we explain the transmitter choice before moving an aerial. Where the Alexandra Palace relay is considered, we point out the smaller list of channels. Better quality is not much use if it removes services you watch.
Victorian villas and inter-war semis: old wiring, new sets
Larger villas around High Barnet have often been altered room by room. Sockets get added, loft amplifiers get forgotten and a splitter ends up behind a cupboard. We trace the route from the aerial to each television and look for the weak connection rather than replacing everything.
A typical job here: an inter-war semi has a good picture downstairs and a stuttering bedroom set. We compare readings on both outlets, inspect the loft equipment and check the flylead. The cure may be a cable repair or a new socket, not a different aerial.
Retuning without wiping a working setup
Before any scan, we write down what you currently watch. Some channels sit on particular numbers for good reasons, and a blind rescan can reorder them. We check the region setting, run an automatic scan or a manual search where useful, and then restore your usual order if the menu allows.
If transmitter engineering is affecting local reception, retuning at the wrong time can waste an afternoon. We check planned work and reported faults. Once service is stable, we retune and test channels from each multiplex.
Freeview Play and the home network
Freeview Play pairs aerial channels with catch-up services over broadband. When the guide works and an app will not play, the network is where we look: Wi-Fi strength at the TV, router position, software updates and sign-in screens. You type your own passwords.
Large Barnet homes with solid internal walls can leave a back-room television at the edge of Wi-Fi range. A cable to the set or a repositioned router helps more than any aerial adjustment. We will tell you if the best fix belongs with your broadband provider.
Recorders, second sets and the garden room
Extra rooms sound simple until the signal has been split too many times. We measure what is available before adding outlets, then choose distribution to suit. A garden office or converted garage needs a route that is tidy and weatherproof, and we agree it before drilling.
On recorders, we explain how many programmes can be recorded at once, tune the unit and test a short recording and playback. If an old recorder only has a standard-definition tuner, we say so clearly.
New developments and shared feeds
Newer Barnet developments can use shared distribution that individual residents cannot alter. We test your own outlet, equipment and cables, then identify what needs building-manager involvement. Fiddling with a communal amplifier without permission causes problems for other flats.
If a block-wide fault is likely, ask neighbours whether they lost the same channels. That shortens the investigation and helps the managing agent understand the scale of the problem.
