We install Starlink across NW9 and the streets around Grahame Park, Colindale Park and Beaufort Park. We scan before fixing, respect managed buildings' rules and keep cabling tidy. A fixed written quote comes first, with a clear price before work starts.
New towers have changed the view overhead
A block that went up across the road can remove a slice of sky that your house or flat used to have. We rely on the Starlink app's obstruction scan from the position you can really use, not a memory of what the street looked like.
Reflections from glass and metal cladding matter for TV reception, but Starlink's challenge is simply physical blockage. A balcony set deep in a tower often has a narrow view upwards. Where the scan shows too many obstructions, we recommend alternatives or tell you the position will not do.
Apartment schemes: balcony, roof or neither
Most residents in the large schemes do not own the roof or the balcony structure. Managing agents often prohibit drilling, forbid items on the railings and require approval for any external equipment. We ask for those rules before we plan a visit, so you do not pay for a job that cannot proceed.
If a free-standing balcony mount is permitted, we check weight, wind exposure and whether the terminal can sit above the rail without extending beyond the building line. Where a shared roof is possible, access is typically controlled and requires prior permission.
Inter-war semis nearby are simpler, but not simple
On a 1930s semi, there is usually a gable, a chimney or a rear wall that can take a mount. The question is which one escapes the new tall neighbours. We compare the rear wall, the side gable and the roof slope with the app's scan instead of defaulting to the old aerial position.
Existing aerial brackets might be reusable, but only after we inspect the masonry, pole and fixings. Where a chimney stack is leaning or its lashings are weak, we flag it and recommend a separate fix. Putting new equipment on tired supports is a false economy.
Cable runs that do not breach the building
In a newly built block, walls often contain fire stopping, membranes and sealed risers. Drilling into those without approval is not acceptable. If cable must pass through a common structure, we need the management company's route approval and their rules on penetrations.
In a house, we plan the route from the terminal to the router, with a drip loop and sealed entry. Starlink's cable has specific connectors and bend limits, so ordinary TV coax is no substitute. We also check where the power outlet sits relative to the router.
Why you might still want a ground-level scan first
Before we visit, photos from your balcony, terrace or garden give us a first idea of where blockage is likely. They do not replace an on-site obstruction check, but they help us decide what to bring and whether the job is realistic.
If you already own a kit, try the app's scan on the proposed spot and tell us the result. Do not climb onto roofs or lean over balcony edges for it. We will take the safe readings ourselves, using proper access arrangements.
Dropouts, Wi-Fi and what each means
Intermittent loss of connection can come from obstruction, damaged cabling, power problems or indoor Wi-Fi. We separate the causes by checking the app's connection data and testing devices in the rooms that struggle. A weak signal in one flat bedroom does not always mean the terminal is badly sited.
In modern flats with thick acoustic walls and foil-backed insulation, Wi-Fi can be surprisingly poor. We plan router position, advise on compatible mesh equipment where the layout needs it and keep any extras clear in the quote.
A typical job here, on a mid-floor flat
A typical job here: a mid-floor flat with a recessed balcony and an agreed management permission for a clamp mount. We check the scan from rail height, find the view too narrow and discuss a shared roof position with the managing agent instead.
If approval comes, we fit the mount, route the cable along the agreed path and connect through your account. Performance depends on conditions, the plan and network demand, so we do not promise a speed.
