We are just as happy to investigate a failed existing system. Whether it was fitted for one flat or the whole building, we assess repair possibilities without assuming you need a complete new installation.
First establish whose entrance it is
White stucco villas and converted period houses are part of the local housing mix, alongside mansion flats around Belsize Park and Swiss Cottage. The outside wall, porch and entrance hall may be common property even when your flat has its own bell. We ask about the freeholder or managing agent before proposing any shared fixings.
For a communal camera, somebody must take responsibility for the recordings. We help you set out the practical requirements: authorised viewers, a secure recorder location and a way to handle requests. A useful security plan should not give every resident unrestricted access to everybody else's movements through the building.
Bring the failed equipment into the discussion
If a picture has gone missing, we begin by checking what remains available at the recorder. An app failure can coexist with perfectly good local recordings; a live picture can coexist with a failed drive. Separating those symptoms avoids ordering a new camera for an unrelated network or storage problem.
We work on other installers' equipment where compatible parts and legitimate access are available. Record the model numbers if they are visible safely, but leave covers in place. We explain the diagnostic findings, identify any unsupported hardware and obtain your agreement to the repair scope before changing components or resetting accounts.
What we inspect without charging for a survey
We walk the approach and consider the view from the street, the front steps and any separate basement access. Then we look at the proposed cable path and where a recorder could stay ventilated and secure. The purpose is to design around the actual NW3 building, not to fill a predetermined camera allowance.
The resulting written quotation describes the proposed equipment and installation. You can see where existing wiring is being retained and where new work is needed. A free assessment is not unlimited fault tracing, and we explain any chargeable diagnostic work separately before doing it. That distinction keeps the decision clear for residents and managing agents alike.
Keep the facade out of the cable plan
On a stucco frontage, a careless cable run is visible long after the installer leaves. We consider sheltered routes, suitable containment and existing service paths without assuming an old cable can carry a new camera signal. We agree visible details before drilling, including bracket positions and how the building entry will be sealed.
Some properties have listed status or conservation restrictions. We flag the need to establish the appropriate permissions rather than claiming a small camera is automatically exempt. Where formal approval or the owner's consent is required, the proposed location needs agreement first; technical feasibility is not the same as permission to install it.
Separate a basement approach from the main steps
An elevated front entrance can leave the lower approach outside the view. We check each access route at the height people use it, including railings that might cross the picture. A high overview of the facade may show movement while missing a face beside a recessed door, which calls for a more deliberate angle.
Around Belsize Village, close boundaries also make restraint important. We focus on your threshold and use masking to exclude adjacent windows where needed. Recording the public pavement or another owner's land brings additional data protection duties. We explain practical steps such as limited capture and signage without offering a blanket legal-compliance guarantee.
Dark porches and reflective surfaces
A bright entrance light behind a visitor can leave their face dark. We examine the contrast rather than immediately choosing a higher resolution camera. Infrared can also bounce from a nearby wall or a glossy cover, washing detail out of an otherwise well-lit-looking scene. Position and cleanliness deserve checking before replacement.
For colour night imagery we discuss how much usable light reaches the approach and whether a different angle would help. We do not solve a dark basement stairwell by aiming a floodlight into another flat. Any lighting proposal needs a sensible direction and purpose, with an evening check arranged where daytime inspection cannot settle performance.
Phone access without a shared master login
We demonstrate remote viewing on your own device and confirm playback over mobile data. Seeing a live feed on the building Wi-Fi is only one part of the handover. You should also be able to select a date, find an event and export the relevant section without giving somebody else the recorder administrator password.
For multi-user systems we discuss separate permissions and account ownership. If a previous resident still controls the device registration, we follow supported transfer or recovery procedures. We cannot promise to bypass a manufacturer's locked account, and we do not leave an old installer's credentials as the permanent way into a residential system.
Arrange a visit that the building can accommodate
Call free on 0800 206 2385 or send WhatsApp to 07595 292534. Tell us whether the request concerns an individual flat, a house or communal equipment. We answer Mon-Sat 8am-7pm and offer same-day appointments where practical, with external work planned around safe access and available daylight.
Entry arrangements, parking restrictions and permission to reach a shared cupboard all help determine the appointment. We bring 25 years' experience, but still need access to the particular equipment involved. Whether you need a repair quotation or a fresh camera layout, we keep the free survey distinct from work you must approve and pay for.
